About Al Bowlly

Bowlly began his musical career as a guitarist in a dance band. In 1923, he moved to London and began working as a session musician. He soon became one of the most sought-after vocalists in Britain, and he recorded with many of the leading bands of the day, including those led by Ray Noble, Lew Stone, and Jack Hylton.

Bowlly’s smooth, mellow vocals were perfectly suited to the popular music of the 1930s. He was particularly known for his ballads, such as “Midnight, the Stars and You”, “Goodnight, Sweetheart”, and “The Very Thought of You”. He also recorded many popular standards, such as “Tea for Two”, “As Time Goes By”, and “Stardust”.

Bowlly’s career came to an abrupt end in 1941, when he was killed in a German air raid on London. He was just 43 years old.

Bowlly is considered one of the most important and influential vocalists of the 20th century. His smooth, mellow vocals and his sophisticated phrasing helped to define the sound of popular music in the 1930s. He is still admired by jazz and popular music fans today.
